I went down to 7-eleven that morning and after paying for my drink, the cashier gave me a yellow ribbon. I was aware that at that time, Former President Cory Aquino was already bedridden at MMC. The thought of the yellow ribbon puzzled me though. At the back of my mind I kept thinking, "Is she dead?". Leaving the thought behind, I pinned the yellow ribbon on my ID and went inside the office. Later that morning, I browsed my cellphone for the latest news. From there, it was noted that she is in a stable condition. All I could do is to sigh and say salamat naman.
The next two days, I went on with the regular pattern of my life. Sleep. Eat. Work. Sleep.
After such, my boyfriend texted me early in the morning before going to school, "wala na idol mo, patay na si Cory." I can't help but cry. The main fact that she died made me heartbroken and sad.
I was 5 when she fought for democracy. I was 5 when snap election took place. I was 5 then.
I was so young but since I came from a political family, it was not difficult for me to understand what's going on.
Durinng lunch time, my borfriend raised the issue about The Marcoses and The Aquinos. I sighted her bravety by saying any other woman would not run for the presidency after what happened to her husband. Instead, that woman would concentrate tending to her children.
President Aquino did exactly the same though, she thought not only of her children but of her country.
She is the true Gabriela and Joan of Arc of my time.
Watching the necrological service dropped my tears. Almost everybody spoke of her humility, courage and leadership which I believe every leader should possess.
Para sa akin, siya na ang pinakahuling matinong presidente.
SALAMAT SA KALAYAAN...
