My Musings on Cory

Like so many Filipinos, I too am so saddened by Cory Aquino’s passing. I couldn’t help but cry with her family during the requiem mass. I feel as if a part of me died with her. She has been, quite literally, a mother to the Filipino people ever since she was catapulted to the presidency in 1986. As I contemplate her life, I am reminded of my own mother. To me, she and my mother are not at all unlike although of course, my mother’s sphere of influence was of a much smaller scope. Cory was president of a nation while my mother was principal of a catholic high school. They both exuded selflessness in their love for their children, generosity to others and an unwavering faith in God and love for Mama Mary.

In Cory-like fashion, my mother died also of cancer. My mother in her suffering from pain and breathlessness remained steadfast in her faith. She continued to pray and was a willing partner in Christ’s suffering until her last breath. She was granted, I believe a most happy death.

Cory was a reluctant leader but once summoned, she took up the challenge and gave it her best. In her last SONA [State of the Nation Address] she said, “I hope that history will judge me as favorably as our people still regard me, because, as God is my witness, I honestly did the best I could. No more can be asked of any man”. She took up the cause of a suffering nation. She so loved the Filipino people; she continued to work for their cause even after her presidency. In her deathbed, her concern for her people never waned. She was lavish in her gratitude for the support of her people but the outpouring of love during the wake and burial showed that her beloved people were much more grateful to her. Yes, no more can be asked.

Watching the events leading up to Cory’s burial, I had an epiphany. While not every one of us is called to greatness or to be a president of a nation, we are called to serve others. Truly only life lived for others is worth living as Albert Einstein once said. Cory’s life is full of lessons about how to find meaning in life. Her life of faith, humility, charity and graciousness should serve as an example and inspiration to all. Truly, she was a gift the likes of which we may not see for a long, long time.

To tita Cory, I say, “paalam at maraming salamat po and may God grant you eternal rest”.

Indeed, the world mourns your loss... You have fought the good fight and you have shown the world, in much the same way as Jeremiah, that weakness disappears in the face of courage and faith. You made injustice tremble at its feat. A torch of democracy and a light to those who hold dear the Christian Faith. I will always remember you, who never left sight of your rosary, throughout my life and will always bear in mind your lesson on being faithful to God and to never doubt His Power! Rest in Peace in God's embrace!
